Fillings Q & A

What is a filling?

Cavities are signs of decay that appear in the form of holes in your teeth. If left untreated, they can become gateways for harmful bacteria to enter your teeth. Fillings are dental restorations that fill up the holes and improve the appearance of your teeth.

Fillings can also be used to fill out chipped teeth, cracked teeth, or spaces between teeth.

Without fillings, teeth affected by cavities can deteriorate to the point where they need to be extracted. Fortunately, fillings can preserve your teeth.

What are fillings made of?

There are multiple materials that can be used for fillings. The most common materials are composite fillings and amalgam fillings.

A composite filling consists of a resin material that can closely match the color of your natural teeth. Composite fillings provide good durability for small to medium cavities. They also usually require less of your tooth to be removed in preparation for a filling than is normally needed for an amalgam filling. They are also particularly well-suited for treating front or highly visible teeth because of the natural look of the filling.

Amalgam fillings are made of a mixture of metals, often including alloy, silver, tin, and copper. They have a silver or metallic appearance. While they’re more durable than composite fillings, amalgam fillings don’t blend in with your smile as well.

How does the procedure for fillings work?

First, our dentists will numb the area where the filling will be placed. Then he carefully removes any decayed portions. Next, he applies a dental substance that opens up the pores of your teeth, which allows for a stronger bond with the filling material.

Once this is complete, the dentist applies either the composite or amalgam filling in thin layers to gradually form the complete filling. After the filling has hardened, your dentist smooths it and polishes it in order to ensure a comfortable fit according to your bite.

How do I know if I need a filling?

The best way to find out if you have a cavity that requires a filling is by seeing Dr. Pizer or Dr.Froehlich. Only he can detect whether you have a cavity that needs a filling. During your regular checkups, he will always evaluate your teeth for signs of decay.

If there’s anything out of the ordinary, he’ll further examine it with special dental instruments, such as X-rays or other imaging. If you notice chips or cracks in your teeth, make sure you come and let him know so that he can see if a filling is the best course of treatment for you.
