Bridges Q & A

What are bridges?

Bridges are sets of prosthetic teeth that are used to bridge gaps in your smile. They’re custom-made for you and closely match the color, shape, and function of your natural teeth. Bridges are fixed restorations, which means they’re not removable and are either bonded to surrounding teeth or attached to implants.

Getting a bridge is one of the best options available if you have missing teeth. They can restore, or even enhance your smile.

What is the procedure for getting a bridge?

Getting a bridge typically requires two in-office visits. At your first visit, Dr. Pizer or Dr. Froehlich will take impressions of your mouth, which they sends to a dental lab where your bridges are made. They may also have to slightly alter the sizes of some of your teeth to make sufficient room for your new bridge.

When you come back for your second visit, Dr. Pizer or Dr. Froehlich will place your new bridge during a simple procedure that should last no more than an hour. They will use a special adhesive to bond the bridge to neighboring teeth, which will act as anchors for the bridge.

Over the following days and weeks, you’ll gradually grow more accustomed to your new bridge. Chewing, speaking, digesting, and other functions will get easier and easier. Dr. Pizer or Dr. Froehlich will schedule a follow-up appointment with you to monitor your progress.

What are the benefits of bridges?

First and foremost, bridges can improve your appearance and help you achieve a rejuvenated smile after losing teeth. Your new restoration will provide a boost in your self-confidence.

Beyond the cosmetic benefits of bridges, there are also a host of health reasons to replace missing teeth. When you lose teeth, your surrounding teeth compensate by shifting over, which can lead to problems, such as tooth decay, gum disease, and bone loss. Bridges help prevent this harmful shifting of teeth.

Also, everyday functions that are negatively affected due to missing teeth, such as chewing, speaking, and digesting food, will all improve once you get a new bridge.

How long do bridges last?

With proper care and attention, your bridge should last at least 10 years or more. To keep your new bridge in good shape, you should brush it and floss it just like you would your other teeth. You should also maintain routine check-ups and other appointments with Dr. Pizer or Dr. Froehlich.
